چکیده

Varun Saxena Using a fixed beam with a fundamental Gaussian mode, a gradient force optical trap was used to translate a single cell using a carboxylated polystyrene bead as a handle. Currently, the force with which the optical trap can manipulate an individual cell alone is very weak. In fact, the inadequate nature of the optical trap on living cells has prevented this technique from being useful in most research involving single cells. However, under the experimental setup used here, the trapping force of a particular neuronal cell line, CATH.a, was increased by over 270% by using carboxylated polystyrene beads as a handle. As a result, optical trapping is now a feasible technique for noninvasively translating individual cells during research.

Two-Dimensional Vision-Based Autonomous Microparticle Manipulation using a Nanoprobe

Autonomous micromanipulation has been an emerging interest in constructing and assembling microobjects. Manual assembly and manipulation of small-scale objects through teleoperation is possible, however autonomy is necessary for large-volume manipulation and manufacturing. In this study, we discuss a two-dimensional autonomous manipulation system, which is based on an optical microscope and a n...

Sorting of polystyrene microspheres using a Y-branched optical waveguide.

We demonstrate how a Y-branched optical waveguide can be used for microparticle sorting. Polystyrene microparticles, optically guided in the waveguide's evanescent field, are directed down the desired, more strongly illuminated, output branch. The output of a fibre laser at a wavelength of 1066 nm is coupled to the waveguide by direct butting. The power distribution between the two output branc...

Higher order microfibre modes for dielectric particle trapping and propulsion

Optical manipulation in the vicinity of optical micro- and nanofibres has shown potential across several fields in recent years, including microparticle control, and cold atom probing and trapping. To date, most work has focussed on the propagation of the fundamental mode through the fibre. However, along the maximum mode intensity axis, higher order modes have a longer evanescent field extensi...
